Appendix G. Quick Reference Emergency Guide


The information below is from the Quick Reference Guide (found in all classrooms), provided by the York Technical College Department of Public Safety.

Emergency Contacts

In any true life-threatening emergency, call 911 for assistance. For on-campus emergencies, call York Technical College(YTC) Campus Safety at 803-327-8013 or Ext. 8013. Chief McDougald may be reached at 803-389-9011.

 

Life-threatening Situations

Call 911 and then immediately contact Campus Safety at 803-327-8013. Relay all information requested by 911. Automated External Defibrillators (AED) may be found, Main Campus: A-Building, Learning Commons, and at the Hood Center. Public Safety has a mobile AED that can be taken to any location on the main campus. AED’s are also located at Wilson Street BCT and the Chester Center. If trained, remember your ABC’s (airway, breathing and circulation) when you are assisting an injured or sick person.

 

Nonlife-threatening Situations

Contact Campus Safety at 803-327-8013 and provide the following information: location of victim and type of injury (if known).(Off-campus sites should provide first aid, call 911 if required, and then notify YTC Campus Safety.)

 

Fire

If you are inside a building and detect smoke or flame: (1) Activate the nearest fire alarm pull station or notify a faculty/staff member. (2) Once you hear the emergency siren immediately exit the building, ask anyone you see to exit the building with you. (3) Assemblein a safe area at least 300 feet from the building. If you detect smoke or flame outside of a building, go to the nearest telephone and dial 911, then notify Campus Safety at 803-327-8013. Do not attempt to enter the building.

 

Severe Weather-Tornadoes/Storms Precautionary / Preparedness

In the event of a severe storm/tornado, move away from any window as quickly as possible. (1) If safe to do so, you should move immediately to your buildings designated safe area, this location is identified on the Emergency Floor Plans located within each building. (2) Ask everyone to move quickly with you. (3) If you feel it’s not safe to move from your current location, move immediately to an inner hallway, or smaller room or closet. The local County Emergency Management Division may sound the emergency siren; however, this will not always be the case, so do not rely on hearing an emergency siren. All campus users should rely on early warning devices such as radio, television, emergency alert radios, York Tech’s Emergency Alerts, and any instructions given to youby Campus Safety and YTC staff and faculty members.

Violent Act (Shooter or Other Threat on Campus)

 

(1) Call 911 and then immediately contact Campus Safety at 803-327-8013. (2) If you feel that it is safe to do so, run away from the threat. (3) If you are not able to run away, find a location that you can lock or barricade your doors. (4) Turn off all lights. (5) Position yourself out of view from windows. (6) Do not make any noise. (7) If you are unable to run away, or find a safe place to hide, as a last resort and only when your life is in immediate danger, try to incapacitate the assailant. *REMEMBER - RUN, HIDE, FIGHT*

 

Hostage Situation

If you see a hostage situation on campus: (1) Immediately call 911. (2) Provide them with all information that you have on the situation. (3) Contact Campus Safety at 803-327-8013 to relay the same information.

 

Bomb Threat

If a bomb is reported or sighted: (1) Remain calm. (2) Get the following information if possible: location of bomb, type of bomb, timeexplosion expected. (3) Notice caller’s speech (educated, accents, etc.). (4) Call 911 with information and then call Campus Safety at 803-327-8013. (5) If a device is found, do not use cell phones within 100 feet of the device.

 

Student Disturbance/Suspicious Persons on Campus/Crimes on Campus

Contact Campus Safety at 803-327-8013 and advise them of the situation. If a student disturbance has become physical: (1) Call 911, then YTC Campus Safety. (2) Never place yourself in the middle of a physical confrontation. (3) Use verbal commands in an attempt to end the disturbance after contacting the numbers above. If you see a suspicious person on campus: (1) Keep the person in view. (2) Give a detailed account of their appearance (race, sex, height, weight and clothing). (3) Note their actions that cause them to be suspicious. (4) Report information to Campus Safety. Any crime observed on the campus should be reported to Campus Safety. Campus Law Enforcement will either investigate the crime or notify the local police for assistance. (Off-campus incidents should be reported to local authorities first, then YTC Campus Safety.)

 

Hazardous Material Spills

In the case of any hazardous material spill: (1) Leave the area immediately. (2) Notify Campus Safety at 803-327-8013 providing them with information on the (1) type of material (2) the location, and (3) volume of the spill.

 

Remember: With any emergency, call 911.
