Welcome to York Technical College



Introduction

This Faculty Guide contains College information, faculty expectations, and shares some of the institutional policies and procedures that are directly applicable to instructional excellence and teaching at York Technical College. This guide is provided as a resource and quick reference guide to the College, and expectations while teaching.

Keep in mind that this is an informational faculty guide, not a comprehensive manual of York Technical College policy. Comprehensive College policies and procedures can be found on the York Technical College website. In addition to the information contained in this guide, academic divisions and individual departments may provide additional guidance and resources related to your instructional area.

College Information

York Technical College was founded in 1964 and sits on just over 118 acres in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The College employs about 300 full-time faculty and staff and an additional 300 part-time individuals. A member of the South Carolina Technical and Comprehensive Education System, York Technical College is a public, two-year institution of higher education that offers a variety of associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Through maximizing student success, the College seeks to contribute to the economic growth and development of York, Lancaster, and Chester counties and of the State. York Technical College has an open admissions policy for qualified students and annually enrolls between 5,000 and 7,000 credit students. Through excellence in teaching and learning, the College provides program offerings, in a variety of delivery methods, in the areas of engineering technology, industrial technology, information technology, business, health sciences, public service, and transfer to senior colleges and universities. In addition, the College offers a comprehensive selection of corporate and continuing education courses designed to promote occupational advancement, personal interest, and business and industry growth.

College Mission & Vision

The York Technical College mission is to build our community through maximizing student success. To support our mission, we uphold the values to be real, be bold, and be better. At York Technical College, student success is at the core of everything we do. From our day-to-day workings to larger institutional initiatives and the strategic plan, we do everything in our power to help students be successful in their education goals. Upholding this culture is a key part of our strategic plan, which consists of six key areas: student success, partnerships, programming, campus environment, branding and marketing, and organizational development.

Accreditation

York Technical College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC) to award associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Many of our programs are also accredited by programmatic accreditation bodies thus ensuring these programs meet additional content and rigor expectations, and prepare our students in accordance with these additional standards.

College Organization

Under the guidance and leadership of the College President, day-to-day operations are led by the Executive Vice President for Academics & Student Affairs, the Vice President for Business Services, the Vice President for College Advancement, and the Assistant Vice President for Human Resources.

Academics & Student Affairs

The Academics and Student Affairs area of the College is comprised of the academic divisions, Workforce and Economic Development, Enrollment Services and Student Engagement, Academic Advising, Academic Coaching and Tutoring, Library Services, and the Institute for Teaching Excellence.

Academic Divisions

Under the leadership of an Assistant or Associate Vice President (AVP), each academic division at the College oversees specific instructional areas. The four academic divisions are Business, Computers, Arts & Sciences (BCAS), Health and Human Services (HHS), Industrial and Engineering Technologies (IET), and Workforce and Economic Development (WED). In addition to the AVP, some divisions may have an Associate Dean or Deans within the leadership structure. You will learn more about the academic division in which you are teaching from your department chair and academic leadership team.

The Workforce and Economic Development Division also provides many non-credit and continuing education courses. These courses and short-term programs are designed for individuals seeking a new career, wanting to upgrade their current skills, or desiring to enrich their lives through learning.

Student Affairs

There are two areas of student affairs-Enrollment Services and Student Engagement. Enrollment Services is comprised of the following service areas: Academic Records Office, Admissions Office, Financial Aid Office, and the One-Stop Center.

Student Engagement strives to connect students with appropriate opportunities to interact with college personnel and other students in order to positively impact their overall experience and success. The Office of Student Engagement is comprised of the following service areas: Assessment Center, Counseling and Support Services, Student Leadership and Events Office, and Student Clubs and Organizations.

Institute for Teaching Excellence

The Institute for Teaching Excellence at York Technical College serves to Train, Inspire, Motivate, and Support faculty through providing innovative techniques, methods, and resources faculty need to increase student success and become master teachers. We are dedicated to providing resources, training, and other professional development for faculty and staff to ensure student success, retention, and completion. The Institute’s values are to increase student success through partnerships, teaching excellence, opportunity, student experience, communication, and philosophy.

The Institute for Teaching Excellence houses many areas related to instructional excellence including administration of the learning management system, Desire 2 Learn (D2L), instructional technology, eLearning development, Inclusive Access course materials, developing and conducting faculty training, providing leadership and guidance for online courses, and curriculum reviews.

Council on Academics & Student Affairs

The Council on Academics and Student Affairs (CASA) is comprised of the leadership team within Academics and Student Affairs and is led by the Executive Vice President, Dr. Stacey Moore. Permanent CASA members include:

  • Academic Assistant/Associate Vice Presidents (BCAS, HHS, IET, WED)
  • Associate Vice President for Enrollment Services and Off Campus Centers
  • Dean of Students
  • Associate Dean for the Institute for Teaching Excellence
  • QLC Chairperson (ex-officio)

Additional temporary appointments to CASA may occur during times of transition or other needs, as determined by the Executive Vice President. These temporary appointments may include the Associate Dean for Dual-Enrollment, the Director of the Learning Commons, Academic Associate Deans, or others as deemed necessary.

Quality Learning Council

The primary mission of the Quality Learning Council (QLC) is to promote the quality of the educational program of the College and provide a vehicle for broad faculty participation in academic affairs at York Technical College through appropriate instructional applications.

The Quality Learning Council strives to develop and promote strategies for student success and retention and serve as contact persons for associated initiatives, promote and assure the quality of the educational programs at the College and participate in the development of appropriate policies and procedures related to academic affairs, support college-wide distance learning initiatives and other instructional technology applications, and recommend professional development opportunities for faculty, staff, and administration for student success initiatives.

Adjunct Faculty Selection

The Quality Learning Council includes two adjunct faculty member representatives (at large). These members are selected by the Associate Dean of the Institute for Teaching Excellence, the QLC AVP representative, and currently serving adjunct faculty members, as indicated in the QLC bylaws.

Department chairs nominate adjunct faculty for consideration by the QLC members involved in the selection process (above). Adjunct faculty nominations should consist of adjunct faculty who have instructed at least one course per year for two or more academic years, and who have demonstrated the York Technical College student success culture in the classroom.

Adjunct faculty selected to serve on QLC do so on a term-by-term basis for up to two academic years (August - July). Adjunct faculty receive a stipend of $50 per meeting attended.

Adjunct faculty serving on QLC understand that participating as a QLC member is voluntary and does not constitute an employment agreement. Further, adjunct faculty understand and acknowledge that participating in QLC does not promise or guarantee employment with the College.

Workgroups & Committees

There are many committees and workgroups throughout Academics & Student Affairs and throughout the College. Faculty who are interested in committee participation should share their willingness with their Department Chair and/or academic leadership.
