Student Support & Services

A college campus is its own world, and students have the chance to experience a wide range of activities and meet new people. It’s a fact that students who get involved in campus life are not only happier, but they’re more successful as well.

At York Technical College, students are able to participate in leadership roles, join student clubs and organizations, as well as enjoy a variety of campus events throughout the year. Some of the academic support services are provided below and comprehensive information can be found on the Campus Life webpage.

Academic Coaching & Tutoring

The Academic Coaching and Tutoring Center is located in the Learning Commons. The mission of the Academic Coaching and Tutoring Center is to help students become independent, self-confident, and efficient learners. Our services help foster student success and retention through the mastery of academic skills and course content. Both in-person and online tutoring is available to currently enrolled students. Our goals are to:

  • Help students learn and apply appropriate academic skills and strategies to promote success in academic work.
  • Help students develop a positive attitude toward learning and confidence in their ability to learn.
  • Introduce students to the learning expectations of college-level course work.
  • Support the academic standards of York Technical College.
  • Help students achieve their potential for learning.

Academic coaching is also available to students. Academic coaches meet one-on-one to help students get organized, conquer procrastination, learn study strategies, and more.

Academic & Career Advising Center

The Advising Center integrates academic advising with a strong career development focus. The Advising Center supports our undecided student population, provides career counseling, and processes all student program changes. In addition, students can receive general support and assistance in all areas of advising, to include registration, schedule adjustments, and more.

Library

The library is located in the Anne Springs Close Learning Commons, which opened in December 2019. Students can access library resources both in-person and online. The library LibGuide page and website provide significant amounts of information, access to the library’s e-books, articles, e-audio books, and streamed video and film databases, and has a live chat available 7 days a week to assist you or students. The D2L Help button also contains a direct link to the library LibGuide website. You, or students, can contact the library at library@yorktech.edu or (803) 327-8025.

When off-campus, YTC students, faculty, and staff are required to log in with their YTC username and password in order to access the Library’s databases. Please enter your YTC username and password on the York Technical College Single Sign-On page when prompted to do so.

The Library participates in resource sharing incentives and reciprocal borrowing with the local public libraries and other academic libraries, within the Consortium in the State of South Carolina. York Tech affiliates are able to check out materials through the shared Academic Libraries automation system using interlibrary loan services.

Counseling & Support Services

York Technical College is committed to maximizing student success by managing personal and academic concerns that may interfere with students achieving their educational goals.

Counseling Services at York Tech offers support to students in a confidential and professional environment, working with students to understand their academic status and develop a plan for success. Students facing personal matters can discuss their concerns with a member of the College’s trained counseling staff to receive guidance and support. As needed, counselors also can refer students to community agencies for assistance. York Tech also offers the Student Assistance Program, a free service that allows students a limited number of free visits with a counselor off-campus.

The Student Engagement component of Counseling and Support Services strives to connect students with appropriate opportunities to interact with other students, and college personnel, in order to positively impact student success.

The Special Resources Office coordinates services and accommodations for students with documented disabilities, including but not limited to physical, learning, and psychological disabilities. These services provide equal educational opportunities to students by minimizing the impact of functional limitations on their academic lives.

The Student Success Center has programs such as the PROMISE & STEM Scholars Programs to support targeted student populations.

PROMISE & STEM Programs

The PROMISE & STEM Scholar Programs at York Technical College ease the transition from high school or the workforce to college by providing the support students often need. Both programs are located in the Student Center Building (K), Success Center Suite.

PROMISE and STEM Scholars offers a wide variety of free services and programs to help students achieve their academic, career and personal goals, while confronting the challenges of completing a college degree.

  • PROMISE serves BCAS and Human Services programs
  • STEM Scholars serves Health Science, Engineering, and Industrial Technology programs

Workforce Preparation

Workforce Solutions is located in the Comporium Center (C Buidling) and provides career guidance and assistance to students and alumni. They work with students who seek internships or apprenticeships and assist with connecting students with local employers. Resume assistance and interview prep are also available. Students can make an appointment through Navigate or contact Workforce Solutions at (803) 325-2888 by email at workforcesolutions@yorktech.edu.

Student Groups

There are many student groups available for membership. Student groups are for those who want to increase their leadership skills while others are based on GPA, or may be of a non-academic interest. Many student groups are overseen by full-time faculty who also serve as advisors.

The Student Leadership and Events Office is located in Building K, and is open Monday - Friday: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. They can be reached at (803) 981-7052 or clubsorganizations@yorktech.edu.
